Racism is still a big issue. If anybody thinks otherwise,he/she's blind.

I am multiethnic Black,White,Hispanic,Native American. I am an idealist in that I wish we all get along, love each other, and treat each other like fellow human beings. However,I am a realist in that I see that racism is still a serious problem.

My first time being called the n'word was on my 9th birthday by a blue eyed blonde gal who I played with and went to school with. The last time that I was called the n'word was in 2004 in a chatroom on yahoo after I had confronted the white guy for calling arabs, sand-n'words. I was furious. What made me more furious is that a lot of people in the chatroom thought I was overreacting and that it shouldn't bother me.

In 1991, I also knew a white navy doctor who believed that multiethnic people like me are biologically psychological messed up because of our mixtures. The sad thing is that I even believed in it for awhile.

It was mainly white kids that called me "retard" when I was in special education for my Dyslexia,Dyspraxia.

Retard,n'word are the 2 words that anger me the most.

I agree with a lot of what Reverend Wright said. I disagree with him about the AIDS being created for blacks though.

A lot of White ministers have said things so controversial and bigoted, they don't get condemned like a black preacher who focus on the racism issue and points out that racism is still alive and well.

racism, charged an American Civil Liberties Union report released

Overlooking racism may lead to undiagnosed mental health disorders www.eurekalert.org/pub_rele...91503.php

Being African American increases a mentally ill individual’s chance of being diagnosed with schizophrenia and reduces the likelihood of that person’s receiving an affective disorder diagnosis. While data have pointed to this fact for several years, psychiatrists are beginning to assess the ramifications of this finding for blacks and how it adds a host of complicating factors to their treatment. pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/co...6/10/17

CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests the possibility of racial and other disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with schizophrenia and comorbid affective and anxiety disorders. Although various causal explanations are plausible, all point toward the need for enhanced cross-cultural competence at all levels of mental health care, especially in the diagnosis and treatment of comorbid psychiatric illnesses. psychservices.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/52/9/1216

Dec 1, 1999 | It took only a few weeks on the job for William Lawson to notice that there was something very strange going on. The psychiatrist had just joined the staff of the John L. McClellan Veterans Hospital in North Little Rock, Ark., and already he had seen patient after patient -- dozens of them, as it turned out -- with the same ill-fitting diagnosis. All African-American men, all veterans of combat in the Vietnam War, they suffered from terrifying nightmares, gut-twisting anxiety, flashbacks of fighting -- classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet they'd been assigned a very different condition: schizophrenia. dir.salon.com/story/books...12/01/schizo

Are schools failing black boys?
Eight percent of the children in America’s public school are black boys, yet their representation in the nation’s special education classes is nearly twice that: 15 percent. African American males are also three times likely as white males to be enrolled in special education programs for "mildly to moderately mentally retarded," according to a 1992 report released by the Office of Civil Rights. www.terry.uga.edu/~dawndba/...kBoys.html

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the degree to which Black students are overrepresented and misplaced in special education, as a result of current testing and placement practices, insufficient parental knowledge of special education rights and responsibilities, and the need for more cultural diversity training for teachers. The two subjects interviewed were a special education teacher/chairperson and a principal; both employed in the same school. A class of special education students was unknowingly observed. Interview responses show little satisfaction with the current methods of placing Black children into special education programs. The observations demonstrated that the majority of the children did not need to be placed there. The use of Black psychologists, increased parental support and knowledge, a non-biased test for placement and increased preservice and inservice training was recommended. www.inmotionmagazine.com/peterz1.html

Minority parents want prompt diagnosis of child autism
In Hartford, Merva Jackson, executive director of the nonprofit African Caribbean American Parents of Children With Disabilities, said she believes that many black children with autism-spectrum disorders are misdiagnosed as having defiant, oppositional or behavioral problems.
"I think it's just a lack of knowledge" on the part of black families about what autism is, said Jackson, as well as cultural insensitivities or racism on the part of doctors and other professionals who evaluate children. www.dailytidings.com/2007/05...tism.php

According to the federal Household Survey, "most current illicit drug users are white. There were an estimated 9.9 million whites (72 percent of all users), 2.0 million blacks (15 percent), and 1.4 million Hispanics (10 percent) who were current illicit drug users in 1998." And yet, blacks constitute 36.8% of those arrested for drug violations, over 42% of those in federal prisons for drug violations. African-Americans comprise almost 58% of those in state prisons for drug felonies; Hispanics account for 20.7%.

Job applicants with African-American sounding names are far less likely to get a callback as are similarly qualified "white" candidates, according to researchers at the University of Chicago and MIT, who submitted 5,000 bogus resumes in response to job ads. Half the resumes bore stereotypical African-American names such as Latonya and Tyrone; half sported traditionally Anglo names like Kristin and Brad.

(CNN) -- Most Americans, white and black, see racism as a lingering problem in the United States, and many say they know people who are racist, according to a new poll.
But few Americans of either race -- about one out of eight -- consider themselves racist.
And experts say racism has evolved from the days of Jim Crow to the point that people may not even recognize it in themselves. www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/1...ll/index.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush acknowledged persistent racism in America and lamented the Republican Party's bumpy relations with black voters as he addressed the NAACP's annual convention Thursday for the first time in his presidency.
"I understand that racism still lingers in America," Bush told the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "It's a lot easier to change a law than to change a human heart. And I understand that many African-Americans distrust my political party." www.breitbart.com/article.php

The researchers performed fMRIs on 13 white participants. During the scans, participants viewed a series of faces -– some of which could be consciously seen and some of which were presented so quickly that participants did not report seeing them. The researchers found that for the ultra-brief subliminal images, amygdala activity was greater in response to black faces than to white faces, suggesting that at least initially, black faces provoked a stronger emotional reaction than white faces. www.eurekalert.org/pub_rele...20804.php

WASHINGTON (NNPA)- Some thought color discrimination among African Americans had pretty much blown away with the black cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s.
But according to sociologists, academics and other measures of the nation's social barometer, the issue is still rooted in day-to-day life. www.frostillustrated.com/atf.php

Failed party promotion underscores color divide between US black women
Yasmine Toney describes herself as a "dark-skinned sista." So when she heard about a recent club promotion in Detroit, allowing all-night free admission to black women with fair or light skin, she was incensed.

"I'm perceived to be aggressive, assertive, attitude-having ... a lot of things, because my complexion is darker," said the 24-year-old receptionist. www.iht.com/articles/ap/...Skin-Tone.php

Obviously Wright made some true statements. I feel that a lot of people are blind to the reality of what blacks(especially darkskinned blacks) still deal with in regards to racism, discrimination, bigotry, and mistreatment. When a black preacher points it out, they are seen as crazy, racist, and God knows what else. I have a big problem with that. I am very concerned about how people can be so naive and be in denial about racism. We still have a long way to go to achieve Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's dream.

I want to reiterate that all racism,discrimination,bigotry,and mistreatment is wrong......it doesn't matter if you're Black,White,Native American,Asian,Pacific Islander,or whatever a person's background is.

      Left field, here:

wouldn't it suck if you were a progressive pale skinned psychiatrist, treating a dark skinned man whom you were at length *convinced* was schizophrenic, but were afraid of the diagnosis for fear of being vilified or professionally ruined? It would way worse to be the patient!

Not arguing any particular point; it's just the sort of thing that pops into my head.

Not a point, yet a point. Patients, untreated, or unwilling, are amongst us every day in tribe.net.
Some could be so, for the point you made, as who wants to say that a person acting insanely in the direction of the race is schizo and still expects to have a practice?
It's an easier battle with a religious freak being committed, than a racial freak, as one has more chances of an outside organization being involved that will seek to ruin your practice, where the other has an acceptance that some people can be filled with their religion and still be somewhat whacked.
Speaking of whacked out religious people...anyone catch Nancy Grace the other night, with the family who kept trying to pray thedaughter into health, until she died. One full month of it, and the kid had, easily, treatable diabetes....ughhhh. No, religion can't be dangerous. DUHHH!

I'm going to have to disagree with this thread. Racism is a teensy tiny issue in America...but the press has been putting a lot of emphasis on it because of Obama and the fact that it sells a lot of newspapers. Keep in mind that the modern news is more entertainment than a reflection of the real world. These are the same people that were in seventh heaven during the last 2 elections. They ate that shit up like it was caviar.

Hell, yesterday they ran an article showing the shocking distant relations of the candidates. Wouldja believe that Obama and McCain are both distantly related to Bush, and Hillary is related to Angelina Jolie. Obama is also related (9 steps removed) to Bratt Pitt...which cancels out is relation to W. How newsworthy is that?

a lot of people bring up that point any way. there were even arguments that maybe more blacks tend to have schizophrenia than whites

but my point was that many blacks are misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia

there was testing that was done.......blacks and whites visited psychiatrists and went over their symptoms of depression to the psychiatrists......blacks were more likely to be diagnosed schizophrenic than whites

also....even thought blacks are misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia when they have depression, studies show that blacks are morely to have chronic depression than whites.

I listed urls about that stuff

there are problems with cultural insensitivity in psychiatry.....there is racism in psychiatry. It can be denied nor sugarcoated.

a long time ago, blacks were thought not have depression because their emotions were thought as being primitive....so they diagnosed them as having schizophrenic

many people view blacks as being too volatile too.....even to this very day.

blacks are overrepresented in special education classes and labeled mentally retarded when they are not. I already listed urls about that

I am part black,.....I was misdiagnosed as having schizoaffective bipolar disorder because of my speech irregularities. they didn't ask me if I had a history of special education nor speech therapy. they judged be by what they observed. they didn't do any psychological testing nor had me do neurological testing.

years later, veterans affairs neurologist told me that I am not suffering from schizophrenia nor bipolar but have neurological problems. to make the long story short, they confirmed my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. a couple of years before that I was diagnosed Inattentive type ADHD as well as Generalized Anxiety Disorder,Dysthymic Disorder, and Avoidant Personality Disorder. the latter 3 conditions stem from insecurity, low self esteem from dealing with Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD issues. many people with learning disabilities have those issues.

I agree that racism is still an issue, as long as people don't ridiculously assume that the only bad racism is white on black racism. There are problems with that type of racism, as well as black on white racism, Latino on black racism, black on Latino racism, black on Asian racism, Asian on black racism, lighter skin on darker skin racism within darker skin races, etc.

Mostly however, I think classism is a bigger problem than racism. What's labeled "racist" in my opinion is more often a case of classism. For example, disparities in criminal convictions is more a likely function of wealth than racism imo. A rich black defendant would have a much better chance in the criminal justice system than a poor white one. If OJ was a poor white guy, he'd be on death row now.

Maybe Ron has hit the nail on the head here.

I agree that racism is still a strong problem but mostly from the point of not being able to talk about it intelligently out of fear of doing the politically incorrect or in the case of the psychiatrist politically suicidal thing whilst completing ignoring the root of the issue of the moment. Everybody's walking on tiptoes and no one is talking about the real issues - like the spread between rich and poor and the disparities this brings about. Every time someone talks about the disparities, its perceived and attacked as an assault on capitalism rather than what it really is: an opening to a discussion that needs to happen about the broken parts of our society.

Especially the media. Adam is quite right about media becoming entertainment. Its all about sales and has nothing to do with information. This is not serving the electorate who fought for the right of a free press. The media doesn't deserve to hide behind the freedom of the press that it hides behind whilst choosing not to serve the pursuit of truth which the society must have in order to be able to protect the right.

Interesting point. I was reminded of an interview I saw with Barbara Walters and Robert Shapiro. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the video. In an interview that took place on Yom Kippur, Robert Shapiro is quoted as saying:

"My position was always the same, that race would not and should not be a part of this case. I was wrong. Not only did we play the race card, we dealt it from the bottom of the deck." He then attacked Mr. Cochran for referring to Mr. Fuhrman as another Hitler and to racism as a kind of Holocaust.

The issue of race proved to be a successful strategy for this defense team.

As I read through this thread, it reminded me of a law review article I read back in law school.

        Here it is:

Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color, by Kimberle Crenshaw. Professor Crenshaw is now teaching at UCLA law school.

The cite is Stanford Law Review, Vol. 43, No. 6 (Jul., 1991), pp. 1241-1299. There seems to be some confusion about the date though. The hard copy that I have lists it as 1993, but the online cites list it as 1991. I'm sorry I couldn't find a good public link - I did find it on google books (the article is a chapter in the book), but I was unable to get a reliable link for it.

The focus of the article is a little different in specifics - violence against women of color, but the high level topic - intersectionality - is something that I think will go a long way as we discuss what happens when we talk about issues of race and class together.

I think it was a mistake to have a predominantly black jury......especially black women........it really backfired.
a lot of black women tend to have hard feelings towards white women for being with black men. I read about that. I have seen that too.

OJ wouldn't have gotten off if it was predominantly white jury.....or even a multiethnic jury.

      that's just my opinion

also.....there are rich black people who get pulled over by the cops because they see them in car that they think they can't afford. Danny Glover talked about being rejected by a cab driver

believe it or not.......rick black people go through racism

if you read all the urls that I wrote.........it goes beyond classism. what about the black sounding names getting rejected. what about the psychiatry stuff.

      what about racial profiling?

what about the American civil liberties calling out USA on its racism

what about the testing of the 13 white subjects that had stronger emotional reactions towards black faces during tests?

      what about the surveys

      racism isn't just overt

      racism is also subtle
